This auction features a Scorpion model two-seater helicopter that was made by the Rotorway Corporation in June of 1983. Incidentially, Rotorway, of Tempe, Arizona, is still in business and makes the Executive model two-seater helicopter for individuals and corporations, having earned a reputation for good designs and stout construction over the years. The company also casts its own proprietary engine blocks, designed specifically for helicopters.
Perhaps the best feature of this particular Scorpion is that it is still virtually new, with only a couple of hours of run time on the engine—it has never been flown, even though it is fully assembled. Accordingly, the winning bidder will, for all intents and purposes, be getting a brand new helicopter.
Better yet, the original owner who purchased this Scorpion kit directly from Rotorway, Mr. Carl Carlson, hired and FAA Certified Mechanic to assemble it, and the work was FAA inspected and approved throughout all stages. Therefore, it was professionally assembled from beginning to end, and in today’s economic climate, a person could expect to pay $25,000 or more for having a helicopter kit assembled to FAA standards. Accordingly, the winning bidder will not only become the proud owner of a new Rotorway Scorpion, but he will also be spared the substantial cost of having it professionally assembled.
As the assembly of this helicopter progressed over a two-year period, Mr. Carlson developed a debilitating arthritic condition that prevented him from flying it; hence, his reason for selling it to me. After towing it to my home on its specially-designed trailer, I parked it in my shop, never finding the time to attach the rotor blades and fly it myself. So once again, it has absolutely no flight time and has always been stored in a fully enclosed, climate-controlled environment.
As the pictures show, this Scorpion has a 133 horsepower water-cooled horizontally opposed four cylinder engine that was developed and built specifically for it by Rotorway. It also features a belt-tensioning control beside the pilot’s seat in the cockpit, making this particular helicopter one of the later versions of the Scorpion. Because it is still virtually new, the engine runs perfectly, and the belts are all in new condition. The attachment of the rotor blades to the rotor shaft is probably the only remaining task that would ready this craft for flight.
The specially designed trailer that you see in the pictures is also included in this no-reserve auction, and considering the fact that I am starting the bidding at the ridiculously low amount of 6,000 dollars, someone will likely acquire this like-new Scorpion for a small fraction of the amount it would cost if it were being bought and assembled today.
It can be picked at my home in Topeka, Kansas. Also, I can always be contacted at (785) 231-8488 if you have any additional questions.
