Air Command Commander 447 Autogyro
This auction is for a vintage Air Command Commander 447 in very nice original condition. It’s never been flown. I’m the second owner; the first owner put it together but didn’t quite finish everything up. It was stored away in a garage for the last 20+ years. It’s in great shape with some scratches and scuffs from storage, and some minor corrosion on some of the fasteners from humidity.
It has a Rotax 447 on it; it was never run until I purchased it. I went through the Bing carb and replaced the o-rings and all of the gas lines, siphon bulb, filter, clamps, altitude line, and sight-line. It has been broken in following the Rotax manual precisely, on a 50:1 mix of Yamalube R2. It runs great.
The gyro also has a Wunderlich prerotator, hydraulic brakes (filled and bled out and working correctly), 23′ McCutchen Skywheels (nice shape with some minor scuffs and scratches from storage; they don’t appear to have ever been mounted), and a gauge pod with German Winter guages (altimeter, air speed, cylinder head temperature and tach), 60″ nylon UltraProp 4-blade prop, and a rotor brake.
Since this is basically a virgin time-machine kind of craft, it reflects exactly what was sold in, I believe, 1987. No updates or safety retrofits have been done.
Everything is in nice shape- it’s all basically NOS. The seat tank is clean since it never had fuel in it until I broke the engine in. There are no leaks from the brakes or fuel taps. Seat cover is nice with one minor split. Tires are clean, hold air fine and have no cracking or checking. There’s some minor adjusting necessary to the various controls and cables, some minor hardware that should be replaced (mostly the Nylock nuts which show minor corrosion on their tin shells), and some torquing of the various fasteners, since this was never completed. The only things missing from the unit are four of the blade bolts/castellated nuts and the 2-pair electrical cable from the gauge pod to the engine. It was never installed and went missing somewhere along the way. All I’ve done is wipe the unit down and do the aforementioned mechanical break-in.
I would completely disassemble the gyro sequentially or by sub-assemblies and clean, touch up, and check everything, but at least you get to start with something that hasn’t been bent, crashed, fatigued, worn out or even flown! It would be a good starting point for a CLT conversion or a makeover into a two-seater.
Add a horizontal stabilizer while you’re at it.
Please remember that this is a serious experimental aircraft and not a toy. It is not suitable for kids to “play with” or for use without proper training from a Certified Flight Instructor. Current helicopter and fixed wing pilots are no exceptions- you will need gyro-specific training to safely fly this craft.
You’re welcome to come and view the gyro at any time prior to the end of the auction. Please email me and we’ll set up an appointment. Sorry, but no, you cannot “fly it around the backyard”.
This gyro is being sold “as-is” and is available for pick up only. If you wish to have it shipped, you must make any and all arrangements. I will meet with your shipper when he arrives and help load it if necessary, but I cannot deliver it anywhere for pickup. I’m located about 15 miles due west of Chicago and easy to find and get to. The winning bidder should expect to offer a non-refundable $500 deposit within 48 hours of winning the bid or at the time of accepting the “Buy It Now” option. The balance of funds is due within 3 days. PayPal is acceptable for the deposit, but please DO NOT USE PAYPAL for the balance. Cash at the time of pick up is preferred, but money orders, certified, or cashier’s checks are acceptable as well. I will not release the gyro to the winning bidder or shipper until the money orders or checks clear the bank (and yes, I do call them to verify), so please plan your pick up accordingly. If I do not receive the funds within the specified time limits, I will offer the aircraft to the next highest bidder or relist it. Foreign bids are welcome, but funds must be drawn on a US bank and are subject to the same restrictions.
Thanks for looking, and please check out my other auctions if you have time!
